Cannabis laws in Ontario
Possession of small amounts of cannabis by adults for recreational use will be permitted in Canada. These laws are different from the medical use of cannabis. These changes do not mean full legalization. Below are some of the laws – visit the government websites listed below for full details.
The federal laws apply across Canada, however, the Provinces and Territories will each have their own laws that may restrict further. It is important to look at the laws within your Province.
If you are travelling within Canada, you will be subject to the laws of the Province you are in.
If you are travelling outside of Canada, it is illegal to take (recreational and medical) cannabis across international borders.
Minimum age is 19
You must be 19 and older to buy, use, possess and grow recreational cannabis. This is the same as the minimum age for the sale of tobacco and alcohol in Ontario.
Where you can use it
The government has enacted the following rules for using cannabis, both medical and recreational.
- Private residences – this does not include residences that are also workplaces (for example, long-term care and/or retirement homes)
- Many outdoor public places (for example, sidewalks and parks)
Designated smoking guest rooms in hotels, motels and inns - Residential vehicles and boats that meet certain criteria (for example, if they have permanent sleeping accommodations and cooking facilities, and are parked or anchored)
- Scientific research and testing facilities (if the cannabis use is for scientific research and testing purposes)
- Controlled areas in:
- long-term care homes
- certain retirement homes
- residential hospices
- provincially-funded supportive housing
- designated psychiatric facilities or veterans’ facilities
Adults 19 and over:
- Posession of a maximum of 30 grams
- No use in workplaces or while operating motor vehicle
- Sold online through the Ontario government starting Oct 17, 2018; and available through private-run stores in April 2019
- No impaired driving
- Zero tolerance for drivers under 21 or those with G1/G2 licence
How to store cannabis
Whether you are an occasional toker or a seasoned grower, chances are you have wondered if you were storing your cannabis correctly. When it comes to storing cannabis, there are many things that you need to consider, and it’s essential to know what factors make a difference.
Why it’s important to store weed correctly:
Your cured cannabis is, literally, a delicate flower that needs protecting.
It’s important to make sure you’re protecting your cannabis from adverse temperature and humidity, protecting from too much light, too much air, and from too much messing around. All of these elements can negatively impact the quality, flavor, and potency of your buds.
By following the correct practices, you can store your cannabis for up to two years without it degrading.
How to Store Your Weed and Keep It Fresh
So, now that you know the enemies, you need to learn how to defend yourself and keep your weed fresh. Thankfully, it’s a fairly simple process, and you may already have everything you need to start storing your weed for a long period of time.
- Proper Temperature to Keep Weed Fresh
- Minimize Light Exposure
- Reduce Exposure to Air
- Reduce the Humidity
What Are the Best Ways to Store Cannabis?
1) UV-Proof Glass Stash Containers
These glass containers not only prevent smells from leaking out, they can also help fresh buds continue curing to improve the quality.
2) Stash Boxes
These boxes are super fancy and classy. They contain compartments to hold various tools or different strains of weed.
3) Glass Mason Jars in Cool, Dark Place
Quart-sized glass mason jars are found everywhere from grocery stores to home improvement stores. These are often used for cooking, but when it comes to storing cannabis they help maintain potency by protecting buds from moisture and air.
